What is Online Class or Home Study Zoom Session? We started the online classes during the emergence of COVID-19 and intend to keep this option for the foreseeable future for families interested. The online sessions are meant to be exactly like our Kumon centre but virtual. It will be a time for the student to get their Kumon worksheets done for the day while we can observe them and provide feedback or help them as need be. It will also give us an opportunity to stay in touch with the students on a regular basis. Some students, especially those on higher levels (Level E and above), may use this time to clarify their questions/doubts from the worksheets for that week and best utilise their timeslot in this manner. Please note that just like in the actual centre, the class time will be purely to observe your child and provide instruction. If you have anything to discuss with the team, kindly contact us separately outside of class. This is so that all instructors can devote their time observing and guiding your child during the centre session.
-
How do we join the online classes? The zoom link for each session will be provided to you via email confirmation of the booking and reminders 24 hours prior to the session. You will need to use the ZOOM application to be able to attend Home Study Zoom Sessions. Click here to download the ZOOM app on your computer. When you register on Zoom App, please USE THE NAME OF THE STUDENT so that we can identify them when they join in on the online session. If you have more than one child enrolled in Kumon at the moment, please create an individual ID for each student under their names for identification purposes, or rename the user to the new student who is joining in.
-
How do we prepare for this online class?A device (mobile phone, laptop or desktop with a web camera) and an earphone/hand set to minimise noise disruption levels. Please also have all your Kumon worksheets organised in a folder or Kumon bag, along with two sharpened pencils, a red pen and an eraser ready before you join the virtual session. To ensure we minimise time for set up, once you have identified a suitable location to place your device camera and worksheet, please mark this A5 square size with a blue sticky tape. That way, your child’s page is in full view of the camera every time and will enable us full visibility to observe him/her. This will also enable them to know where to position the camera and their worksheet in future classes without too many adjustments. Below are some setup options, ideal for our observations: Laptop Setup (Most Recommended) Mobile Phone Setup Tablet Setup (Least Preferred)
-
What is the process once I have joined in?The students will start off by being in the ‘Waiting Room’ when they first join in. We do request everyone to rename to STUDENT NAME for security reasons for us to let you in. Please be ready with the worksheet you will be doing on the day and any other sheets from homework that you may have had questions on. All students will be on MUTE at all times in the Main Section, if they have a question, they must press the RAISE HAND button located under the 'Participants' list on the right hand column. When we note a VIRTUAL RAISED HAND, we will ask the student to click on BREAKOUT ROOM from the controls on their screen, where an allocated staff member will be able to assist them with their query. Students must then join back the Main Session and continue with their work. Please position the camera on your worksheet as clearly as possible to assist us in observing you and providing guidance as needed. When you finish your work, please press RAISE HAND button again so you can see a staff again in the BREAKOUT ROOM, show your marked and corrected work and then click LEAVE THE MEETING. Please call or text the instructor if you have any confusions about the online centre experience.
-
What if I have an Achievement Test in my Homework Pack?COVID Normal Operations: All Achievement Tests must be done at the centre premises in person. This applies to all students irrespective of if you have opted not to attend centre in person on a regular basis. Please let the instructor know before your coming test day so we can make arrangements to accomodate your child within the centre safely.
-
What if I have finished my worksheet for the day already? We do have many families who already have a Kumon routine in the mornings especially now that there is no/online school and many parents are working from home. This is absolutely fine and you do not NEED to do your day’s worksheet at the online session if you prefer to do them sometime in the morning everyday. You may use the Virtual Centre session to come in and say Hi! to us, show us your work from the day so we can make note of how you are progressing and/or ask us questions if you found something hard over the week. Just know that we will be available and online during centre hours should you need anything from us.
-
What if I cannot hear you? Please ensure you can see the microphone icon for yourself on the screen once you join the virtual centre, this means that your audio is connected and we will be able to hear you when needed. By default all participants are always on MUTE in the Main Session to avoid disruptions. To troubleshoot your audio connection, try ‘Join Meeting with Audio Connected’ option or click on options in your Audio setting of Zoom and select the device connected.
-
What if I have a question about my child’s progress? You may continue to book phone or Zoom consults through our Bookings page to discuss the progress and plan ahead for your child with the Head Instructor.
